According to Il Messaggero, Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on a potential move for Inter Milan midfield mainstay Nicolo Barella in the ongoing transfer window. Barella has been one of the standout performers in Italy over the past couple of years. His rise in prominence has been key to Inter Milan’s return to the top in Italian football. He was also a part of the Azzurri squad that won the UEFA Euro 2020 last year.
Even though Barella’s performances dipped somewhat towards the second half of the 2021/22 season, the midfielder is rated as one of the best in his position in the Italian top flight. He has been on the radars of some top clubs across Europe, with Real Madrid having had their sights on the 25-year-old for a long time, while clubs in England have also shown an interest.
Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as one such interested party in securing Barella’s services. The Lilywhites have already strengthened their midfield unit this summer with the addition of Yves Bissouma, who arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion. However, it seems like Antonio Conte could be looking to add another body in the centre of the park.
Tottenham will look to get rid of both Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele permanently this summer, while Harry Winks is also on the exit ramp. Despite that, the Lilywhites can still call upon Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp and Rodrigo Bentancur, whereas youngster Pape Matar Sarr is also back in contention after returning from his loan spell.
However, Sarr is being targeted by AC Milan this summer, while Skipp had some fitness problems last summer. With Conte planning to build a team that can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the time, another quality addition in the midfield department can come in handy, as Tottenham will be competing on multiple fronts.
