North London giants Tottenham Hotspur have been talked up as a potential title challenger in the Premier League this season. This is according to former Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder Paul Merson.
Paul Merson has been impressed with Spurs during the eight-week-old Premier League season. While he was on Sky Sports for his punditry job, Merson tipped for the Premier League title as he showered praises on manager Jose Mourinho.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that Jose Mourinho can mastermind a first Premier League title for the North Londoners as he has the experience of winning the biggest prize in English football.
Mourinho is a three-time Premier League winner with Chelsea. He won the first of those three titles during the 2004/05 season before adding a second title in the following campaign (2005/06 season). The Portuguese tactician won the Premier League twice in his first Chelsea spell before adding a third title during his second spell. The league title came during the 2014/15 season.
Tottenham Hotspur have been on the way up since Mourinho replaced the sacked Mauricio Pochettino as their manager about a year ago. Pochettino and Spurs struggled at the start of last season thus leading to the dismissal of Argentine tactician Pochettino. Mourinho was able to salvage the season as he led Tottenham Hotspur to Europa League qualification via a sixth-placed league finish at the end of the last campaign.
Spurs made a poor start to the current Premier League season with the 1-0 home loss to Everton on the opening weekend, but Mourinho and his wards have recovered to put together a run of seven games without defeat in the Premier League.
The North Londoners briefly tasted top spot on Sunday afternoon following the 1-0 away win over newly promoted team West Brom courtesy a late goal from Harry Kane. The lead didn’t last long after Leicester City usurped them to second place later on Sunday.
